Network Marketing Education: The 5 Don'ts of Prospecting
These Five Common Mistakes Will Break Your Prospecting Efforts Every Time
If you were to ask me to sum up 3 key points of network marketing education I would tell you this. (A) Learn to identify your target market, (B) Reach out to them, and (C) Avoid the 5 never changing mistakes of prospecting. For the purpose of this discussion, we'll focus on (C) Avoiding the 5 never mistakes of prospecting.
If you can avoid these mistakes and simultaneously focus on what does work, regardless of future technological advances in marketing and media, you'll be in control of your business.
You'll have a sense of safety and security knowing you understand the fundamentals of network marketing prospecting.
In other words, technology will change, but these basic fundamental prospecting concepts will stay the same.
Mistake #1: Exclusive Reliance On ONE Marketing Medium
Effective business' are always on the lookout for different ways of reaching people while continuing to ramp up their efforts on what is currently working for them.
When people get started with network marketing, they usually have an idea of how they would like to generate prospects. Some think Search Engine Optimization is the best way, others only want to use video marketing, and some even want to place classified ads in newspapers.
I've always encouraged people to use internet attraction marketing techniques to prospect leads for their business.
I'm a HUGE proponent of the low cost involved various forms of internet marketing coupled with the ability to meticulously track any metric you desire.
That said, as part of your ongoing network marketing education, I'd like to remind and encourage you (and myself) to always be on the lookout for new and emerging mlm marketing methods.
Mistake #2: Relying on the Tools to do ALL the Work
Back when I was a Xango distributor, my upline used to religiously tell us to "let the tools do the work for you." You know, the company CD's, websites, etc.
His argument was that the tools had already been "proven" and created by marketing geniuses, so there was no need to "reinvent the wheel" as he would often say.
Looking back at where the industry was at that time, I can't say I honestly blame him. An unskilled network marketer is very likely to give someone too much information or incorrect information, thereby destroying any sense of credibility.
However, network marketing has and always will be about creating meaningful personal relationships. Unfortunately, network marketing education hasn't always focused on this.
Prospects will join a company because of YOU not because of a CD they saw or a video they watched. mlm tools serve a very important purpose in network marketing education and should be used when appropriate but never relied upon.
Mistake #3: Relying on Your Upline to Close Your Leads
Leveraging on the credibility of your upline doesn't do you much good nowadays. Your upline is not always going to be available to prospect with you. If you really want to become an independent business owner, you need to think and act like an independent business owner.
The job of your upline is not to close your leads for you but to bring out the best in you. Their job is to help provide you with ongoing network marketing education that allows you to recognize and build upon your strengths and point you in the direction of the resources that will help you solve problems..
Mistake #4: Information Overload
We all have our own reasons for getting into the business and things that get us excited about network marketing. Our prospects may also have things they like about the business model.
Therefore one of the worst things you can do is present too much to them too fast. Don't overwhelm them with network marketing education that doesn't apply to them or they will quickly become apathetic.
One of the methodologies we cover here at smart-mlm-business.com is how to use a consultative approach to find out the needs and wants of a prospect.
If you know what they are looking for, you're much more likely not to overwhelm them with ideas and concepts that don't apply to them.
Mistake #5: Follow Up Negligence
It's been said that prospects need anywhere from 1-7 contacts before they will make a decision. Follow up is one of the keys to successful prospecting and unfortunately, follow up negligence, is one of the biggest mistakes being made today.
Neglecting to follow up with prospects happens for many reasons. Everything from not having proper contact management to having too many leads can be cause for this mistake. As you delve into your business and begin applying the concepts you learn you'll gain and understanding of your limits and be better able to stay within them.
Unfortunately, much of the network marketing education being provided today is focused on teaching you the opposite of what you just read. Alot of success within the business comes not only from learning what to do by also by "unlearning" former ideas.
These concepts are universally ineffective and will continue to be so. Make the commitment today to avoid these common mistakes and you'll increase your chances of sponsoring more people with less effort.
