They had provided a lot of value to me and my life with their tips and training. Therefore, it was only natural for me to trust them and buy their stuff (The fact that I didn't benefit from the products is my fault).

In internet business, content is king. This saying is repeated often. It's actually very true.
However, I would venture to say that list building is even more important than content.

Marketers have been trying to overcome the trust factor for years using testimonials, money-back-guarantees, and even online security logos. However, the mentors I like and trust the most are the ones that have repeatedly provided value to my life over and over again.
Without list building, the trust-building process become nearly impossible.

The people that make the most money are mainly those that have some of the biggest and best email lists. They are able to expose and promote themselves to more people and thus generate more income with less effort (assuming the people they are exposed to already like and trust them).
In fact, almost every time they send out an email (granted they don't abuse their power) they can generate $1,000's without having to spend any money at all on advertising. Not a bad deal at all.
